Overview
"Going for the One" is the eighth studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released in 1977. After a brief hiatus during which the band members pursued solo projects, they regrouped in Montreux, Switzerland to record this remarkable album. It marks the return of legendary keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who had left the band after "Tales from Topographic Oceans" (1973). With a fresh lineup and a new approach to songwriting, "Going for the One" features shorter, more accessible tracks, with the notable exception of the epic 15-minute track "Awaken."
This album blends blues rock, ethereal elements, and classic progressive rock, and it became one of the band's most commercially successful albums. It topped the UK Albums Chart for two weeks and reached No. 8 on the US Billboard 200. The singles "Wonderous Stories" and "Going for the One" both became hits, with "Wonderous Stories" becoming the band's highest-charting single in the UK. "Going for the One" was certified gold by the RIAA within a month of release, marking the band's enduring popularity.
