Overview
The world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's Dionysos, an avant-garde opera fantasy, took place at the 2010 Salzburg Festival and became a highlight of the event. Directed by Pierre Audi and featuring set designs by Jonathan Meese, this groundbreaking production explores the intersection of myth and philosophy, as inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's poetic works.
Dionysos follows the enigmatic figure of "N", who embodies Dionysos, Marsyas, and Nietzsche himself, presenting a dreamlike, almost Dionysian journey through themes of art, chaos, and self-destruction. The opera's modernist and fragmented style is brought to life through the dynamic performances of Mojca Erdmann (Ariadne) and Johannes Martin Kränzle, alongside the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher.
This 2-DVD set also includes the documentary I Am Thy Labyrinth by Bettina Ehrhardt, which delves into the creation of this audacious opera and Nietzsche’s influence on Rihm. The documentary explores Nietzsche's time in the Engadin region, where he formulated much of his philosophy, and reveals the artistic process behind Rihm’s Dionysos.
