WILHELM KEMPFF PLAYS/PERFORMER BEETHOVEN
Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) was a paragon of the German classic piano tradition. His Beethoven performances, in particular, were marked by an intense musicality that favored introspection over technical
flamboyance. His career was remarkably long and he gave characteristic performances well into hi s 80s. Beethoven is the subject of this rare Kempff video from the rich archives of Radio-Canada. Featured is the great "Hammerklavier" Sonata (Op. 106), here given a truly magisterial performance in which the astonishing complexities of this great work are elucidated in the hands of a supreme Beethoven interpreter. Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) incarnait la tradition allemande du piano classique. Ses interprétations de Beethoven, in particular, were imbued with an intense musicality, where the technical flamboyance yielded the step to introspection. His career was remarkably long, and at the age of over 80 he still delivered remarkable performances.
Beethoven is at the heart of this rare Kempff videotape, taken from the Radio-Canada archives. We hear the Grand Sonata (opus 106), interpreted here in a truly masterful way, and where the extraordinary complexities of this major work are elucidated by the magic of the hands of one of Beethoven's great interpreters.
