Uniko is a work that breaks down the barriers between folk music, the avant-garde and minimalism. Scored for accordion, voice, string quartet and sampler, it was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet in 2003. The present DVD documents the performance of the suite, which was heard for the first time in Helsinki in September 2004. The performers include not only the Kronos Quartet but also Finnish musicians, Kimmo Pohjonen and Samuli Kosminen, who were together responsible for the work. An expressive lighting plot using live projection surfaces, surround-sound and electronic effects designed to create a sense of alienation combine within the framework of this performance to create a novel musical experience that resembles nothing so much as a trance. "The music is sheer physicality... Uniko is like an ocean tide coming in." The New York Times
