English Summary:

Under the Greenwood Tree is a light-hearted and, at times, rather humorous adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel of the same name from 1872. But here be no tragedy, no debasement, no ruination, no cruelty, no subterfuge. I know, I know, it doesn’t sound like Thomas Hardy at all, but it is! Here be, rather, a somewhat straightforward love story, a coming-of-age tale of a young, beautiful schoolteacher, who must choose her future companion. Yes, it’s the traditional marriage plot. And there are many eligible and worthy suitors sniffing around.

Thomas Hardy OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England. Thomas Hardy was born on 2 June 1840 in Higher Bockhampton (then Upper Bockhampton), a hamlet in the parish of Stinsford to the east of Dorchester in Dorset, England, where his father Thomas (1811–1892) worked as a stonemason and local builder, and married his mother Jemima (née Hand; 1813–1904) in Beaminster, towards the end of 1839. Jemima was well-read, and she educated Thomas until he went to his first school at Bockhampton at the age of eight. For several years he attended Mr. Last's Academy for Young Gentlemen in Dorchester, where he learned Latin and demonstrated academic potential. Because Hardy's family lacked the means for a university education, his formal education ended at the age of sixteen, when he became apprenticed to James Hicks, a local architect.

Erdőkkel körülvett elbűvölő falu Mellstock, ahova tanítónőként tér vissza Day gazda lánya, Fancy. Karácsony napja van, a kis falu templomában a helybéliekből álló falusi zenekar szolgáltatja az ünnepi énekekhez a zenét. Régi hagyomány ez. A szelíd, de határozott és öntudatos lány felbolygatja a kis falu életét. A falu templomában harmóniumon játszik, így a zenekarra nincs szükség többé. Első látásra megtetszik az egyik gazdafiúnak, Dick Dewey-nek, s a vonzalom kölcsönös, de a gazdag földbirtokos, Shiner és a vikárius Maybold érdeklődését sem fogadja közömbösen. Mindhárom férfi feleségül kéri és Fancy-nek döntenie kell, válassza a gazdag házat és birtokot, tegyen eleget apja kívánságának, vagy döntsön az elutazás, a velencei kiküldetés mellett, hiszen a falusiak nem szívlelik, a harmóniumát is elrontották már. Kiemelkedő regényeinek színhelye a képzeletbeli délnyugat-angliai megye, „Wessex”. Thomas Hardy 1840. június 2-án látta meg a napvilágot a délnyugat-angliai Dorset grófság mindössze nyolc lakóházból álló kis tanyáján, Higher Bockhamptonban. Édesapja, idősebb Thomas Hardy építőmester volt, s az ötvenes években téglaégetőjében két munkást is alkalmazott. Az író anyja, leánykori nevén Jemina Hand, egy inasnak és egy lecsúszott nemes lányának gyermeke volt. Amikor későbbi férjével, az író apjával megismerkedett, szakácsnőként és cselédlányként dolgozott a környék tehetősebb házainál. Az író rokonai többnyire béresek, inasok és munkások voltak, a később híressé vált Hardy nemigen lehetett büszke származására. A család életének menetét az évszakok váltakozása és a templomi kalendárium határozta meg.
