TULIPÁN / 95 Hungarian Folksongs is a compact, pocket-sized collection that forms part of the celebrated Virágos (Flowers) series. Together, the ten volumes of the Virágos series comprise an extensive anthology of over 1000 folk songs. In the 1920s, Hungarian musical life increasingly emphasized the importance of young people singing authentic Hungarian folk songs rather than foreign ones. Lajos Bárdos’s influential pocket book, 101 Hungarian Folk Songs (published at the end of the 1920s with a preface by Kodály), served this purpose. As Bárdos later noted, it was the efforts of Szabolcsi and others that laid the foundation for widespread folk song singing among urban youth and, subsequently, adults.
Inspired by this model, the Virágos series was launched—with its first two volumes appearing in 1952 and 1957 under Bárdos’s editorship—and later expanded to ten volumes with contributions from eminent specialists such as Benjamin Rajeczky, György Deák Bárdos, and Károly Mathia. TULIPÁN offers 95 Hungarian folksongs that vividly evoke the nation’s rich cultural and musical heritage.
