English Summary:
Sándor Kányádi (1929) is a native of Translyvania and has lived since 1950 at Kolozsvar (Cluj) in Romania. He studied Hungarian phi logy at the then autonomous Bolyai University and graduated in 1954. He has worked for various journals since, and has spent many years on the staff of the Hungarian-language children's magazine Napsugdr, His first book of poetry was published in 1955 but it was only in the 1960's that he found that distinctive voice which expresses the fears and endeavors of the Hungarian minority in Romania as well as the sense of displacement of an intellectual from a rural community. In the 1980's when his poetry (other than children's verse) could not be printed in Romania, his books were published in Hungary. In 1993 he was awarded the Kossuth Prize in Hungary, and in 1955 the Austrain Herder Prize.
