Overview
The Water Margin is a Japanese television series based on the classic Chinese novel of the same name, which is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Produced by Nippon Television, the series originally aired in 1973 and 1974, featuring two seasons consisting of 26 episodes.
The narrative follows the adventures of 108 outlaws during the Song Dynasty, primarily focusing on the character Lin Chung (played by Atsuo Nakamura) and his conflicts with the corrupt local official Kao Chiu (played by Kei Satō).
For the English-language adaptation, the series was narrated by Burt Kwouk and aired on the BBC from 1976 to 1978. It included brief plot synopses rather than full translations, giving viewers an overview of the story without exhaustive dialogue translation. An English novelization, also penned by David Weir, was published in 1978.
The series is celebrated for its memorable philosophical quotes, such as: "Do not despise the snake for having no horns, for who is to say it will not become a dragon?"
The DVD Box Set contains all 26 episodes from the 1970s TV series about a group of outlaw heroes dedicated to fighting tyranny in feudal China.
