Overview

"Царская Невеста" (The Tsar's Bride) is one of the most dramatic operas by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, performed by the Bolshoi Theatre soloists, chorus, and orchestra under the direction of conductor Fuat Mansurov. This opera, written in 1898 and based on the drama by Lev Mey, embodies Rimsky-Korsakov's vision of deeply lyrical and expressive vocal lines, complemented by a rich tapestry of melodies. Despite not utilizing traditional folk themes, the music conveys a distinctly Russian character, heightened by its intense dramatic structure and emotional depth.

This recording, produced by the USSR's All-Union Recording Studio in 1973, showcases the exceptional artistry of vocalists including Tamara Sinyavskaya (Lyubasha), Galina Vishnevskaya (Marfa), and Evgeny Nesterenko (Sobakin), among others.

The opera unfolds in four acts, beginning with a vibrant "Overture" and progressing through scenes filled with complex characters and dramatic intensity. Highlights include the haunting melodies of Lyubasha’s arias, the evocative dance scenes, and the poignant duets and trios that reflect the opera’s emotional stakes.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s mastery is evident in every aspect of this recording, from the nuanced orchestration to the vocal ensembles, making this release a definitive performance of "Царская Невеста."
