"A MASTERPIECE" - NEW YORK TIMES
A moving portrait of peasant life in turn-of-the-century Lombardy and using a cast of non-actors, this is one of the last great examples of Italian neo-realist cinema.
Batisti is a proud but poor peasant who wants a better life for his young son. He sends the boy to a school far away - wearing his only pair of wooden clogs, the child makes the long trek to class on foot.
All is well until the clogs are damaged. Wood is scarce, as is money, so Batisti sneaks into a rich landowner's grove to "borrow" the wood to make a new pair. But he is caught and the rich man decides to oversee the poor man's punishment personally.
