Overview

John Cranko’s Onegin is one of the most celebrated full-length ballets of the 20th century, a dramatic and romantic adaptation of Alexander Pushkin’s novel Eugene Onegin. Set to the sweeping compositions of Tchaikovsky, Onegin tells the tragic tale of love and regret between the disillusioned aristocrat Onegin and the innocent Tatiana. Choreographed with stunning precision, the ballet culminates in Cranko's masterful use of pas de deux.

This performance, recorded live at the State Theatre in Stuttgart, showcases world-class dancers Alicia Amatriain as Tatiana and Friedemann Vogel as Onegin. With the support of the Stuttgart Ballet, under the direction of conductor James Tuggle, this production is an essential piece for lovers of romantic and dramatic ballets. The bonus features include interviews with set and costume designer Jürgen Rose, and discussions with ballet legends Marcia Haydée and Reid Anderson.

Interesting Facts

  • John Cranko’s Onegin premiered in 1965 and is widely regarded as one of his finest choreographic works, blending classical ballet with intense emotional storytelling.

  • Alicia Amatriain and Friedemann Vogel, stars of this production, are internationally acclaimed dancers and have been honored with numerous awards for their contributions to ballet.
  • The bonus features include a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of Onegin and in-depth interviews about the ballet’s artistic and historical significance.
