New York a harmincas években. Vérzivataros és bűnökkel terhelt múltját maga mögött hagyva Lamont Cranston a távoli Tibetből érkezett a metropoliszba, és feltett szándéka, hogy ezentúl a jót szolgálja. Ő a titokzatos Árnyék, aki képes ellenfelei elméjét összezavarni, és eltűnni a szemük elől. Egyedül ő képes szembeszállni Dzsingisz kán ugyancsak különleges képességekkel rendelkező utódjával, a világuralmi terveket dédelgető Shiwan kánnal, aki a kísérleti stádiumban lévő atombombára pályázik.
