English Summary:
The background to the appearance of a new type of museum, the open air museum with its accompanying ethnographic collections, lies in the last third of the 19th century, when special exhibitions were mounted in more than one European country. One of the guiding principles of the organizers of these world exhibitions (e.g. Paris, 1867; Vienna, 1873) was the recognition that there was a historical connection between folklore and national culture. They aimed to illustrate this interaction as clearly as possible by moving away from the traditional form of museum collection and towards living collections of houses and articles of furniture in their natural environment. The idea of transferring such items worthy of preservation and presentation into one place, arranged like
a park, was first put into practice in Stockholm, in 1891.
