English Summary:

This ten part series was originally broadcast on PBS in 1995. What it does, in a nutshell, is give a decent (though not super-detailed) overview of rock and roll as a genre, as well as all the sub genres that exist within that giant umbrella of music. Obviously this is far too massive a subject to approach with the idea of covering everything. Luckily, The History Of Rock N Roll does do a pretty good job of giving a nice, general history lesson on the music that has, since its inception, become a part of our everyday lives. It does this with a great selection of live performance clips, interviews, and archival footage that is set against some informative and interesting narration that makes for a well rounded and well executed package.

Disc One:

Rock 'N' Roll Explodes - This primary episode sets the rest of them up. It gives us a general overview of rock and roll in its many forms, and brings us way back to a time before it technically existed. The genre was fused out of country, gospel roots and blues and influential artists such as Hank Williams Sr., Chuck Barry, and Ray Charles are here doing there thing, contrasted by modern day artists such as U2 and Public Enemy. The point here is that when you really boil it down to the bare essentials, acts like hank Williams aren't so far removed from those like Public Enemy.

Good Rockin' Tonight - The focus here is on the summer of 1956 where Elvis gave the then burgeoning rock and roll scene a serious dose of sex appeal and fused country, rockabilly, rock and roll and blues. Obviously, this took off and made the man an international superstar whose popularity has never really been rivaled. Sun Records and the American recording industry in general took off during this period with guys like Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbinson and Buddy Holly all hitting the charts in a big way, basically inventing rock and roll as they went along. This episode puts a heavy emphasis on how television helped the rock and roll phenomena, bringing live music into the living rooms of people across the country and the world.

Disc Two:

Britain Invades, America Fights Back - When The Beatles landed in New York in 1964, music history was made. It was the beginning of what would later be known as the British Invasion, as dozens of great up and coming acts out of England found and tapped into the massive fan base that the American music buying public represented. The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who all followed in The Beatles' footsteps, selling literally millions of albums and concert tickets. This in turn got the American bands' creative juices flowing as bands like The Beach Boys and The Hollies turned out some of their best work, proving that a little friendly competition can be a good thing.

The Sounds Of Soul - Here we take a look at how Gospel music morphed into Soul music and then into Motown. Pioneers like James Brown and Sam Cooke influenced acts like The Four Tops and The Supremes who in turn spawned Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye. This episode traces and explains that lineage in an entertaining manner, and of course, traces it's relationship to rock and roll.

Disc three:

Plugging In - This entry starts off with Bob Dylan plugging in his guitar and playing rock and roll at the Newport Folk Festival. I don't know if Dylan knew he was making history at the time or not, but it sure angered the crowed. It also changed things, making rock and roll a predominantly electric style of music from then on out. Fast-forward a bit to Hendrix tearing it up at The Monterey Pop Festival, and The Who causing mass destruction as they play My Generation and you can see where it was heading. Even The Beach Boys and The Mamas And The Papas got into the act, creating new sounds on albums like Pet Sounds.

My Generation - If the title didn't give it away, the focus here is on sixties rock, hippies, and counter culture and rock and rolls place within those things. The rock proper is represented by clips from The Rolling Stones (is Street Fighting Man one of the best songs ever or is it just me?), Hendrix, The Who, and Cream. The hippies are here with The Grateful Dead, Country Joe MacDonald, and Crosby Stills and Nash. OF course, The Doors are here too, as is Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane. At just over an hour in length, there's a whole lot of psychadelia packed into this episode – whether or not that's a good thing I suppose depends on your taste – but love it or hate it, it's historical importance is explored in an interesting and informative matter.

Disc four:

Guitar Heroes - Here the focus is on the axe. It's all about guitar players in this installment. For just over an hour we follow the rise of the guitar as an instrument in general and then more specifically how it shaped rock and roll. This piece spends time following the influence that guys like Elvis and Chuck Berry had, right up to more modern players like Slash and Eddie Van Halen. Of course, you can't cover rock guitar without Hendrix, and he's here too along with Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.

The 70s: Have A Nice Decade - This was an interesting segment that took a look at the rise of rock to arena level tours and mass merchandising in the seventies, and how it's lasted compared to fads such as disco (which also gets a bit of coverage here, and George Clinton is none too happy about it). Everyone you'd expect to see and associate with 70s rock is here, from Kiss to Queen, from Elton John to Fleetwood Mac, from Alice Cooper to David Bowie. It also takes a look at the 70s funk phenomena with footage and interviews from Sly And The Family Stone, George Clinton, and a few others.

Disc Five:

Punk - OK, as interesting as this was and as nice to revisit a lot of classic punk footage (albeit in snippets and not full performances, just like the rest of the series), how they could do a documentary on the history of punk rock and not even mention The Damned in passing is beyond me. That quibble aside, there's plenty of Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, and Iggy on hand to keep things interesting. What Bruce Springsteen and Sting have to do with punk rock is a little confusing (the correct answer? Nothing!) so I was perplexed to see them here as interviewees, but hey, we can't all be perfect.

Up From The Underground - This last disc takes a look at the rise of MTV and the music video as a new medium, and the simultaneous rise of hip hop and how the two would eventually intertwine, and how 'alternative' music would spawn into arena rock events such as the Lollapalooza tour. Clips and interviews with Devo, Run DMC, N.W.A., R.E.M., Public Enemy and Ice-T are highlights, and there is also footage from the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson are included as well.

4. RÉSZ: A SOUL TÉRHÓDÍTÁSA

A gospelből gyökeredző soul az ötvenes években a slágeres pop zene és a rhythm-and-blues hatása alatt kezdett virágozni. Első mesterei közt szerepelt Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson és ,a szórakoztatóipar legkeményebben dolgozó férfija", azaz James Brown. A soul térhódításában három generáció énekesei gyűlnek össze az Apollo Theaterben, hogy meséljenek mesterségükről. Smokey Robinson az 000 Baby Baby című szám születésének hátterét eleveníti fel.

5. A Rock új arculata

A hatvanas évek közepén újjászületett a rockzene. Mikor Bob Dylan az 1965-ös New Port-i népzenei fesztiválon belecsapott elektromos gitárjába, energikus zenéjével és a szövegek társadalmi töltetével kis híján tömeghisztériát okozott. A Mamas and the Papas a California Dreamin -nel egy újfajta hangzásvilágot hozott létre. Brian Wilson a Beach Boysból arról mesél, mekkora nyomást jelentett számukra a Beatles együttessel versenyezni. Pete Townshend visszaemlékszik arra, mikora The Who és Jimi Hendrix feje tetejére állította a Montereyi Popfesztivált.

6. RÉSZ: MY GENERATION - AZ ÉN GENERÁCIÓM

A hatvanas évek végén berobbant a hippi-korszak. Ugyan rövid időn belül el is hamvadt a láz. De e hőskor bandái meghatározót alkottak. A My Generation — Az én generációm bemutatja a Greatful Dead, a Santana és a Jefferson Airplane közös fellépését. 7. RÉSZ: A LEGENDÁS GITÁROSOK

10. RÉSZ: A VIDEOKLIPEK DIADALA
