English Summary:

The Big Sleep is a 1946 film noir directed by Howard Hawks, the first film version of Raymond Chandler's 1939 novel of the same name. The film stars Humphrey Bogart as private detective Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as Vivian Rutledge in a story about the "process of a criminal investigation, not its results." William Faulkner, Leigh Brackett and Jules Furthman co-wrote the screenplay. In 1997, the U.S. Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," and added it to the National Film Registry.

Private detective Philip Marlowe is summoned to the mansion of General Sternwood. The general wants to resolve the ‘gambling debts’ that his daughter Carmen owes to bookseller Arthur Gwynn Geiger. As Marlowe is leaving, Sternwood's older daughter, the divorced Mrs. Vivian Rutledge, stops him. She suspects her father's true motive for calling in a detective is to find his protégé Sean Regan, who had mysteriously disappeared a month earlier.

Marlowe goes to Geiger's shop, which is minded by Agnes Louzier, and then follows Geiger home. Hearing a gunshot and a woman’s scream, he breaks in to find Geiger's body and a drugged Carmen, as well as a hidden camera empty of film. After taking Carmen back home, he returns and discovers the body has disappeared.

Philip Marlowe magánnyomozót egy milliomos idős férfi azzal bízza meg, hogy derítse ki, mivel zsarolja lányát egy könyvekkel üzletelő férfi. A detektív felkeresi a könyvkereskedőt, de már csak a hulláját találja - a holttest mellett pedig ott ül megbízója lánya, önkívületi állapotban. Marlowe innentől fogva ahová csak beteszi a lábát holttestekbe botlik, kaszinótulajdonosokat és simlis üzletembereket követ, gazdag és veszélyes nők társaságában forog, ügyetlen bérencek lövései elöl menekül, cinikus humorát azonban még a legveszélyesebb helyzetekben sem veszíti el. Az ügyet pedig tovább bonyolítja a gyönyörű és ravasz Vivien, munkaadójának idősebb lánya.

A rendezőzseni, Howard Hawks, aki a musical, a western és a vígjáték műfajában is maradandót alkotott, Raymond Chandler regénye alapján a legendás Bogart- Bacall párossal a film noir egyik legfontosabb filmjét készítette el.
