England v Hungary, 25th November 1953: Full coverage of the game with original English and Hungarian commentary
In 1953, England were still unbeaten on home soil against continental national teams while Hungary, by then Olympic champions, were unbeaten in three years and had recently won the Central European International Cup having defeated Italy 3-0 in Rome. After Hungary's 6-0 defeat of reigning Olympic champions Sweden in the 1952 Olympic semi-final, the English FA's General Secretary land later FIFA president) Sir Stanley Rous invited Hungary's national coach (and later UEFA Vice President) Gusztáv Sebes and his team known as the 'Magical Magyars to play England at Wembley. The British media promoted the contest as 'the match of the century and it turned out to be just that. Hungary, playing in cherry-red jerseys and captained by Ferenc Puskás, scored four goals in the first half-hour and, in doing so, changed the course of football for ever.

Real Madrid had already won the first four European Cups between 1956 and 1959, but could they win it for a fifth year running? The 33 year-old Ferenc Puskás, who had restarted his career in Spain after incurring a FIFA suspension for defecting to the West once the 1956 Hungarian revolution had been crushed by the Soviet army, was preparing himself for his first European Cup final, having been left out the previous year; he would go on to score four goals and play a key role in the greatest European Cup final ever. The crowd size, total number of goals, number of goals scored by one team and also by one player in the Glasgow final are all still records. Incredibly, the match had been broadcast on TV and radio all around Europe except in Hungary where Puskás had becorne persona non grata for political reasons, so the Hungarian commentary was recorded by 88 year- old legendary football commentator György Szepesi 50 years after the final in Hampden Park.
