The most popular pas de deux are often performed in gala performances; they include the showstoppers from Don Quixote, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty presented here. On the other hand, the pas de deux from Coppélia, Giselle, and Romeo and Juliet are seldom performed out of context, being more fully integrated into the choreographic narrative of the complete ballets. Jerome Robbins' haunting Afternoon of a Faun, matched artfully to Debussy's score, is more about narcissism than connection.
