Overview

Te még élsz? is a moving and deeply personal documentary by the acclaimed Hungarian director Sára Sándor, exploring the life of Keményfi Béla, a Hungarian war veteran and political prisoner. Through the lens of his incredible journey, the film paints a vivid picture of survival and the absurdities of totalitarian regimes.

Keményfi Béla's story begins as a teenage conscript, forcibly taken to the West during World War II. Returning to Hungary in 1945, he was paralyzed by a Soviet soldier’s bullet and subsequently accused of espionage. Convicted under false pretenses, he was sent to Siberian labor camps beyond the Arctic Circle. Despite enduring physical and psychological torment, he relearned basic skills, eventually returning to Hungary after Stalin's death. His resilience saw him rebuild his life, becoming a postman, student, and legal advisor—though he was never compensated for his suffering.
