PREFACE
which might be read as an Epilogue

Ask anyone around Constantinople if he knows Zeta, and he will answer, "Zeta? You mean the emperor's librarian? Priscus's friend? Yes, of course. A wise and honest man, they say, with a heart of gold.'
Well, I am that Zeta; and if you ask me, I say nobody knows me. True, I am the emperor's librarian; true that Priscus is fond of me. But-wise? No, I am not wise. I am not even always honest. And as for the heart of gold, it is nonsense to speak of it! Have I not killed? - yes, and not just one man but a hundred! I have thieved, and I've cheated too. But I'm being honest now, at any rate, in writing it all down truthfully in this book of mine. When you've read it, you'll be able to judge for yourself about my wisdom. Wisdom! - my foolishness, rather, for no man in the world has ever been such a fool.
After reading it, will anyone still say that he ever really knew me? Hardly, I think - not even my loyal Djidjia. It is only the face of a man that can ever really be known, and a man isn't his face: the real man is hidden behind the face. A girl taught me that....

Gárdonyi Géza - Slave of the Huns

Hunok királya Attila idejében játszódó történelmi regény Gárdonyi Géza ma már klasszikusnak tekinthető műve, mely a romantikus magyar prehistória széles panorámájú történelmi tablója, s ugyanakkor kalandos regény és megható szerelmi történet. A művet Andrew Feldmar fordította angolra.
