Overview

Rachmaninov's The Miserly Knight is a dramatic portrayal of greed and obsession, based on Alexander Pushkin’s dark tale. Directed by Annabel Arden, this Glyndebourne production brings out the intense psychological depth of Rachmaninov's opera, depicting the tragic consequences of a man consumed by his hoarded wealth. Conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, the London Philharmonic Orchestra delivers a brooding and atmospheric performance, perfectly matching the intensity of the story.

Sergei Leiferkus leads the cast with a powerful performance as the Baron, a role originally written for the legendary Russian bass Fyodor Chaliapin. Leiferkus portrays the character's descent into madness as he becomes increasingly obsessed with his treasure. The stark and minimalist set design by Vicki Mortimer, along with Nicky Gillibrand’s period costumes, enhance the oppressive and claustrophobic atmosphere of the opera.
