He first entered the entertainment industry in 1962 and became a world-famous star with many critically acclaimed albums and a string of chart-topping singles. He has sold around 50 million albums worldwide. In Germany alone, more than 10 million copies were sold. He has won 250 platinum, gold and silver awards.
In 1967, he was invited to join a British group that won a music festival competition in Belgium, and he became a media sensation. Shortly after the competition, the Belgian record company released two of his songs, one of which was runner-up and the other won in three countries, and offers to perform in European countries came pouring in.
In the fall of 1969, a British record company released his own composition, "Durham Town," which quickly rose in the British charts.
One day, Roger Whitaker received a phone call from Atlanta, USA. It turned out that the wife of a local radio writer and director had heard the song by chance during a trip to Canada, and immediately asked her husband to arrange for a radio broadcast. The song became the most played song in the world, and within weeks it became a global hit, topping the charts in 11 countries, reaching the top 20 in the US in 1975, and selling more than 11 million records worldwide. The Last Farewell became Roger Whitaker's only US number one single and his most popular signature song in the US.
In 1985 he was recognized by the Germans as the country's most successful recording artist, and in 1989 he received the Gold Medal from the Writers' Institute. In the 1990's, Roger Whitaker continued to be an active performer on stages around the world, releasing a variety of albums of covers of old favorites, as well as continuing to contribute to various charitable causes that have gained him a great deal of popularity amongst music lovers.
