Roger Whitaker (born March 22, 1936) is a British musician who combines songwriting and singing. His musical style is an electronic hybrid of country, pop and radio hits. He is world-renowned for his perfect alto voice, trademark whistling and excellent guitar playing ability.
Born to English parents, Roger Whitaker was born in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, to a merchant father and a teacher mother. As a student, he was an enthusiastic member of the school choir, but at that time he did not consider a career in acting and studied hard in the hope of becoming a teacher or a doctor.
In 1959, Roger Whitaker arrived in England to study, studying zoology and biochemistry, and even becoming an exemplary student with top grades. After school he resumed his love of music and began to try his hand at composing, and when he was about to graduate in 1962, he joined the school's jazz program and was invited to write songs for the performances. By chance, his work was noticed and before he knew it, the record company put him in the studio. At the same time as he got his diploma, his song "Steel Men" entered the UK charts. Now he has to decide whether to enter the music business or go back to being a teacher.
