English Summary:
The first TV series was Escape to River Cottage and was shown on Channel 4. In this show Fearnley-Whittingstall left London to pursue an ambition of self-sufficiency, growing his own vegetables and raising his own animals at a gamekeeper's cottage near Netherbury in Dorset. The series had six episodes and first aired in March and April 1999. It was followed by Return to River Cottage in 2000 and River Cottage Forever in 2002, in which viewers followed Fearnley-Whittingstall's further adventures as a downsized smallholder.
Episode 3
At midnight, Hugh hunts down slugs that are eating his vegetables. The next day, he and Michael Michaud inspect the River Cottage garden and enjoy some carrots, fennel and courgette for lunch. Hugh decides to compete in the Beaminster Horticultural Society's Summer show, and meets with veteran competitor Roy Gunning and his wife Barbara to get some advice. Hugh prepares a vegetable chutney to enter in the show.
Next, Hugh goes diving for spider crabs and prepares linguine with crab for his diving companions.
At the vegetable show, Hugh's raspberry jam and Victoria sponge win first prize. He also presents a selection of six vegetables which wins third prize. Roy once again wins in the category of "longest bean" but narrowly misses winning the challenge cup.
Hungarian Summary:
Amikor azonban a nyersanyagok bekerülnek a konyhájába, hôsünk rögtön elemében érzi magát. Tökéletes magabiztossággal és találékonysággal varázsol elénk édes és sós ínyencfalatokat egyaránt. Sôt a helyi gazdák körében évente megrendezett zöldségkiállításon is sikeresen „domborít”.
