As the great Jewish scholar Saadia HaGaon has written 'the Song of Songs resembles locks to which the keys have been lost'. This book outlines past approaches to, provides a detail- ed structure of, and ventures to produce the lost keys for the interpretation of the Song. Parts 1 and 2 provide a broad introduction to the use of simile and metaphor, together with their part in the typological/eschatological projections of the Bible. These provide the foundation for the salvation-historical ap- proach to the Song of Songs developed in Parts 3, 4 and 5 of the Book.Cyril Hocking is a retired telecommunications engineer and a life-long student and teacher of God's Word. For many years he was joint editor of the magazine Precious Seed. He was the co-editor of Church Doctrine and Prac- tice, Treasury of Bible Doctrine, and Day by Day through the Old Testament. More recent- ly he has spent some years in Israel. This has greatly enhanced his understanding of the land and the peoples of the Bible and also has deepened his particular interest in the Old Testament.
The painting of the male & female gazelles used on the front cover is the work of the Israeli artist Walter Ferguson, whose kind permission to include it is acknowledged. The beloved in the Song is described 'as a roe', and is heard to appeal to his loved one, 'Rise up, my love', Song 2.10. See pp. 60-63.
The photograph on the back cover is of the beautiful 'Madonna Lily' in one of Carmel's mountain valleys, May- time. It is used as a smilie by the beloved to describe his loved one 'As a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters', Song 2.2. See pp 83-88
