Overview
Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), WWV 86B, is the second of the four epic music dramas that make up Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). Premiered in 1870, it is one of Wagner's most celebrated works. This recording, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf, features an impressive cast including Birgit Nilsson as Brünnhilde and Jon Vickers as Siegmund, with the London Symphony Orchestra providing the orchestral accompaniment.
The opera is split into two acts in this recording, with the first act (Atto I) covering some of the most famous moments, including Siegmund's declaration of identity in "Siegmund heiss’ ich und Siegmund bin ich!" and the passionate love duet with Sieglinde. The second act (Atto II) begins with the stirring Vorspiel (Prelude) and continues with intense dialogue between the characters as the drama unfolds.
