Overview

Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta is a one-act opera that tells the touching story of a blind princess, Iolanta, and her journey towards understanding her condition and finding love. Premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1892, Iolanta is renowned for its lyrical beauty and emotional depth. This 1982 live performance from the Bolshoi Theatre features Galina Kalinina in the title role, with a powerful supporting cast including Lev Kuznetsov as Count Vaudémont and Artur Eisen as King René.

The plot centers on King René's attempts to shield his daughter, Iolanta, from the knowledge of her blindness. When Count Vaudémont stumbles upon her secluded garden and falls in love with her, the truth of her blindness is revealed. With the help of the Moorish physician Ibn-Hakia, Iolanta is cured, and the opera concludes with her joyful acceptance of love and sight.

Ruben Vardanian conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Bolshoi Theatre in this moving production, bringing Tchaikovsky's sweeping melodies and poignant harmonies to life.

  • This Bolshoi Opera production was recorded live in 1982, offering a glimpse into one of Russia’s most prestigious opera companies during the Soviet era.
  • Galina Kalinina’s portrayal of Iolanta captures the innocence and strength of the character, while Lev Kuznetsov brings passion to his role as the love-stricken Count Vaudémont.
  • The role of Ibn-Hakia, the Moorish physician, is a unique figure in Russian opera, introducing the theme of medical science and psychological healing to a traditional operatic love story.
