A poor boy named Tom Canty and Edward, the Prince of Wales exchange identities but events force the pair to experience each other's lives as well.
This production was a six-part BBC mini series screened in 1996. Julian Fellowes was the producer and screenwriter, while the director was Andrew Morgan. Production values and locations are all excellent and there's a sterling cast, including John Bowe, Peter Jeffrey, Rupert Frazer and Sophia Myles. Geoffrey Bayldon and Tenniel Evans appear in cameo roles and Keith Michell, justly acclaimed for his performance as Henry V111 in 'The Six Wives of Henry V111,' reprises the role here. Philip Sarson (whatever happened to him?) plays both Prince Edward and urchin Tom Canty, and does pretty well too. James Purefoy gives an engaging performance as hero Miles Hendon, a soldier and minor noble who helps Prince Edward claim his throne.
Author Mark Twain called his story 'A Tale for Young People of all Ages.' Injustice and identity are the main themes - the Prince and the Pauper swap places but then struggle to convince people who they really are. The Prince learns how the poor live, Tom achieves a privileged position and Miles, declared dead by his wicked brother, regains his inheritance. Happy endings all round, it's a great story for all the family. Highly recommended.
