One of the most important film-makers the world has seen, Pier Paolo Pasolini earned a reputation as one of the most distinctive and controversial voices of post-war Italy. and remained a daring and taboo-challenging artist up until his violent, untimely death in 1975. Sharing the same desire as fellow Neo-Realists, Rossellini and De Sica, to depict the struggles and joys of the common man, he took the working class as subjects, and used radical Marxist philosophy and a fiercely poetic sensibility to create some of the most unique and outstanding films ever made.

HAWKS AND SPARROWS

Pasolinie most unconventiomal movie sees a man and lus son set out un life's journey, accompanied by a Marxist crow which comments on the passing landscape. Amongst their many encounters in St Francis, who is determined to convert them. A surreal fable, with a touch of Don Quixote, it sets two innocents in a world dominated by the Church and Marxism. In casting one of haly's top clowns Toto in the Inad roin, the matuse of tragi-comedy in enhanced.

DEDIPUS REX

Based on the classical tale by Sophocles, Oedipus Rex is the sale of a young man who never knew his parents. An oracle foretells a tragic fate which comes to pass when he unknowingly murders his father and marries his mother. Pilmed in Morocco, Pasolini's Interpretation is a lavish costume drama complete with swordfights and powerful performances from two of his regular actors Franco Cittu, (The Godfather) and Silvana Mangano (Death in Venice).

PIGSTY

Two unrelated tales that explore the darker side of the human eondition The first sees a wandering soldier and his band of loyal followers descend into cannibalism. The second finds the successful son of a former Naal (played by Truffaut regular Jean-Pierre Leaud) seeking pleasure with pigs. Second only to Salo amongst Pasolini's bold statements on the savagery within all men, the film remalus startling and shocking even today
