The film was co-written and directed by Olivier Dahan, and stars Marion Cotillard as Piaf. The UK and US title La Vie en Rose comes from Piaf's signature song. The film is an international co-production between France, Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom.

Cotillard's performance earned her several accolades including the Academy Award for Best Actress — marking the first time an Oscar had been given for a French-language role — the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and the César Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance. The film also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, the BAFTA Award for Best Makeup, Costume Design, Film Music, four additional César Awards and grossed $86.3 million worldwide.

Tout commence avec Édith, âgée de quelques années en 1918, en pleurs dans une rue de Paris après que d'autres enfants se sont moqués d'elle. Quelques mètres plus loin, sa mère chante pour essayer de gagner sa vie. Cette dernière écrit à son mari, Louis Gassion (Jean-Paul Rouve), envoyé sur le front, qu'elle va partir poursuivre sa carrière en laissant Édith à sa grand-mère maternelle. Louis Gassion, alors qu'il rentre à Paris, trouve Édith très malade faute de soins; il la confie donc à sa propre mère, gérante d'une maison close en Normandie, avant de disparaître. Une des prostituées, Titine (Emmanuelle Seigner), prend la petite Édith sous son aile et s'en occupe comme si elle était sa fille. À cette époque, Édith perd momentanément la vue à cause d'une kératite, qui est guérie suite aux prières adressées à sainte Thérèse de Lisieux.

Alkoholista szüleitől nem sok jóra számíthatott, a nagyanyja nevelte, az utcán és egy bordélyházban nőtt fel. Kilátástalan és reménytelen évek voltak ezek, hogy éhen ne haljon, az utcán énekelt és koldult. Itt fedezte fel az egyik párizsi kabaré igazgatója, és nyitotta meg előtte a hírnév kapuját. A törékeny énekesnőnek az egész világ a lábai előtt hevert, de ő mégis boldogtalanságra volt ítélve. Szerelme tragikus körülmények között meghalt, Piaf az alkohol és a drogok rabságába került.
