The Master and the Musician is the title of the first entirely instrumental album by guitarist Phil Keaggy, released in 1978, on NewSong Records. It was later reissued, with a bonus track, on Myrrh Records in 19891. The album is a groundbreaking piece of work for him as an artist, for the Christian music genre, and for instrumental guitar music in general2. Full of emotional twists, meditative sounds, and world-influenced tonalities, The Master and the Musician stands as an oasis in an otherwise barren field of Christian instrumental music2. The album features Keaggy playing classic, electric, and Ebow guitars, bass, ARP bass synthesizer, drums and percussion, voices, and other instruments1. The album also includes contributions from other musicians such as Tom Baker, Nick Kircher, Philip Kimbrough, Peter Pfiefer, Jim Issacs, Tom Fryer, and Susan Kircher.
Phil Keaggy is a renowned and award-winning Christian musician who has been performing for over 50 years. He is known for his virtuosic guitar skills, his vocal harmonies, and his spiritual lyrics. He has released over 60 albums, both solo and with bands such as Glass Harp and 2nd Chapter of Acts. He has also collaborated with many other artists such as Randy Stonehill, Wes King, Michael Card, John Michael Talbot, and Phil Madeira.
