Overview

"Per Gö Tüz - I. V. – A Magyar Hadsereg a Donnál" is a powerful and groundbreaking documentary directed by Sára Sándor, focusing on one of the darkest chapters in Hungarian military history during World War II. This film, created using archival footage and interviews with 265 survivors, explores the fates of the over 200,000 Hungarian soldiers who were either lost or captured during the Battle of the Don. These soldiers were decimated by the harsh Russian winter, German forces, Soviet counterattacks, and ultimately, by their own government's decisions.

This five-part cinema version was released after the Krónika TV series (which was banned after its third episode), and it went on to win the Grand Prix at the Hungarian Film Festival in 1989. The film sheds light on the disaster’s origins, conditions, and long-lasting consequences, offering a wide-ranging perspective through the voices of military officers, soldiers, labor servicemen, war correspondents, and widows. It became a monumental work for representing Hungary’s historical memory, which had been silenced for decades.

Miről szól?

A magyar hadsereg doni veresége a második világháború fájó katasztrófája, amelynek során a rosszul felszerelt, ellátási és utánpótlási nehézségekkel küzdő, az orosz télben fagyoskodó katonák megsemmisítő vereséget szenvedtek az orosz hadseregtől.

Mitől különleges?

A szocializmusban sokáig csak a hivatalos ideológia szerint lehetett beszélni a második világháborúról, amely szerint a doni katasztrófa a Horthy-rendszer egyik fő bűne volt, hiszen a vezetés csak meghalni küldte a 250 ezer magyar katonát a Don-kanyarhoz. A túlélők nem beszéltek az átélt borzalmakról, mert szégyellniük kellett, hogy „a fasiszta magyar hadsereg” katonái voltak, amely a „dicsőséges Szovjetunió” ellen harcolt. Ezzel az interpretációval számolt le Sára Sándor dokumentumfilm-sorozata, amely a kor lehetőségeihez képest  őszintén mondta el, mi történt a magyar katonákkal a hazájuktól több ezer kilométerre fekvő frontvonalon.
