Book introduction

The Bible is central to my interests, both as a graphic artist and as a private individual. I deal primarily with Biblical illustrations and the designing of symbolic, single line drawings which suggest the spirit of the Bible. I also like to design cards and postcards of Christian subjects. 1 am often requested to design logos for Christian organizations. For example, I designed the emblem of the Bethesda Children’s Hospital in Budapest. When I am in a story-telling mood and my imagination takes flight, I prefer the delicate Chinese ink pen technique which allows the expression of intricate thoughts. When, however, the expression of the Christian soul draws me, I do not despise the use of ironic humor. My caricatures are born from this. As well as drawing, I have, for the last five years, also been writing. My first volume of meditations, Close to Love, illustrated with my own drawings, was published by the Editors “Szegletkő” in 1995.

With his one-line drawings András Simon has reached what he had been longing for: under his hands miracle is born. The visualization, expression and transmission of thoughts, feelings, unspeakable words and sounds is achieved in that art. Soundless signs on a plain piece of paper create meaningful signs in the viewer’s mind, heart and soul. You only have to look and see with your heart open. There’s the message through art: a single line from soul to soul.

It’s a miracle what he created and how he created this brand new visual world. Nowadays it’s rather rare – especially in the genre of graphic art – to invent a new style. This graphic style, the simple rhythm and complex message of the one-line drawings are represented by András Simon only. It’s a style, a kind of trademark, which makes his works unmistakable.

András Simon is a successful artist and a successful man. He is successful, because through his manifold art he can express everything he has deep inside. He is successful, because he has had many exhibitions, lectures, and today he is an internationally known artist. He is successful, because his works can be found in Hungarian, Finnish, German, British, American and many other collections and homes. He is successful, because his works are popular. He is successful, because he is loved. But above all, he is successful, because he loves.

Simon András mondanivalója sokrétű, szimbolikája felöleli a lélek minden rezdülését, és minden lapja érezhetően mély hitet és humánumot tükröz.. Néhány vonallal képes olyan gondolatokra, érzésekre rávilágítani, amelyek létezéséről nem is tudunk, vagy csak nagyritkán tűnnek elő lelkünk rejtekéből.

Simon András egyvonalas képeivel elérte azt, amire mindig is vágyott: keze alatt megszületett a csoda. A gondolat, az érzelem, a kimondhatatlan szó vagy hang képi megfogalmazása, kifejezése és közvetítése. Hangtalan jelek a sima papíron. Beszédes jelek a fejben, szívben és lélekben azoknak, akik nyitott szemmel nézik. Üzenet a művészet médiumán keresztül: lélektől lélekig – egy vonallal.

Csoda az is amit létrehozott, és az is, ahogyan megalkotta merőben új képi világát. Manapság ugyanis meglehetősen ritka, kiváltképp a grafika műfajában, hogy valaki új stílust teremtsen. Ez a grafikai stílus, az egyvonalas rajzok egyszerű ritmikája és többrétegű szimbolikája csakis Simon András sajátja. Stílus, egyfajta védjegy, amelynek alapján művei bárhol, bármikor felismerhetők, mással össze nem téveszthetők.

Simon András (Budapest, 1958. február 4. –) magyar grafikusművész. Munkásságát két fő irányvonal mentén tagolhatjuk. A klasszikus mesteri Bosch álomvilágot idéző rajzokra, amelyekben rendkívüli rajztudása párosul egy könnyed és nagyvonalú játékossággal, elegáns humorral. A másik fő vonal a jellegzetes „egyvonalas grafikák” sajátos világa. Ezek egyfajta védjegyei a művész szakmai munkásságának, amelyet az alkotói lét olyan nagyjai méltattak mint Szántó Piroska, Jókai Anna, Esterházy Péter vagy a Csók növendék Szabó Vladimir.
