Transylvanian dance music is an exceptionally rich and complex part of European traditional culture, a classic example of regional interethnic affinities, and a source of inspiration for folklore movements worldwide. Transylvanian-born István Pávai assesses that multifaceted heritage from the perspective of the Hungarian communities, but with constant reference to Romanians, Roms, and other ethnic groups. The monograph includes such aspects as the notion of folk dance music; the impact of different technical means, scholarly concepts, and communicative strategies on fieldwork-based knowledge; social roles and ethnicity; the use of instruments and instrumental ensembles; rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic aspects of dance accompaniment.

Az erdélyi tánczene az európai hagyományos kultúra kivételesen gazdag és összetett része, az interetnikus kapcsolatok klasszikus példája, és inspirációs forrás a folklór mozgalmak számára világszerte. A szerző ezt a sokrétű örökséget a magyar közösségek szemszögéből értékeli, de gyakran utal a román, szász, roma hagyományokra. A mű fontosabb témakörei: a népi tánczene fogalma; a technikai eszközök, a tudományos koncepciók és a gyűjtő-adatközlő viszonyrendszer hatása a kutatás eredményeire; közösségi státuszok és szerepek, etnikai vonatkozások a népi tánczene művelői és használói körében; a népi tánczenét megszólaltató hangszerek, hangszeregyüttesek; a tánckíséret ritmikai, dallami, harmóniai vonatkozásai. A 440 oldalas kötetet 88 fotó, 131 kottapélda, 3 táncíráspélda, 7 fakszimile és két színes térkép illusztrálja.

István Pávai, PhD in musicology, is professor at the Liszt Academy of Music, and leader of the Department of Folk Music and Folk Dance Research at the Institute for Musicology RCH, Budapest. A native of Transylvania, he graduated at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy, Cluj-Napoca, having studied both Hungarian and Romanian folk music in depth. His main field of research is the folk dance music of Transylvania and its interethnic implications; he has also published on the history of ethnomusicology, dialectal characteristics of folk music, phenomena of folklorism, and musical aspects of ethnic identity. A founder of the Folklore Documentation Center of the Hungarian Heritage House, he has made significant contributions to the field of digital archiving and online database processing of folklore documents.
During nearly fifty years of fieldwork, he has researched c. 350 settlements of Transylvania and Moldavia, comprising all the major ethnographic regions of these provinces, attentive to Hungarian, Romanian, German, Jewish, and Romani culture. He also visited communities of various ethnicity in Dobruja, Kosovo, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovakia. The result is a collection of over 700 hours of audio and video recordings, of which he has published a number of LPs and CDs.
