Oscar Peterson in Russia is a 1974 live album by Oscar Peterson, accompanied by Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, recorded in the Soviet Union.
On the evening of November 17, 1974, a rapt Russian audience was privileged to attend what amounted to a master class in jazz piano, conducted by one of the foremost practitioners of that art, Oscar Peterson. Rarely has Peterson (b. 1925) been in more dazzling form, which is akin to observing that a certain Matisse is a particularly fine example of how to use color.
The pianist's full palette was in evidence on this magical night. Whether playing solo, duo (with empa-thetic assistance from bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen), or trio. From the bows to forebears such as Ellington, Basie, and Waller to the French Impressionism of Michel Legrand's "Watch What Happens" to superla-tive originals like "Place St. Henri" and "Hogtown Blues" (both from "Canadiana Suite"), Oscar Peterson in Russia's nearly 90 minutes recalls a quip made by the celebrated writer Saul Bellow (not à propos of the pianist, but it might as well have been): "He knocks a hole in the ozone."
