English Summary
Once Upon a Time in China is a 1991 martial arts film set in Foshan, China, during the late 19th century in the Qing dynasty. The story revolves around Wong Fei-hung (played by Jet Li), a renowned martial arts master and the instructor of the local militia. He also operates a traditional Chinese medicine clinic called Po-chi-lam, where he trains three apprentices: "Porky Wing," "Bucktooth" So, and Kai.
The film begins when Liu Yongfu, the commander of the Black Flag Army, invites Wong to his ship to witness a lion dance. However, during the performance, sailors from a nearby French ship mistake the sound of firecrackers for cannon fire and retaliate, injuring the dancers. Wong heroically picks up the lion head and completes the performance.
As the story unfolds, Wong learns about the dangers facing China from foreign invaders. He meets Siu-kwan, the daughter of a sworn brother of his grandfather. Despite their romantic feelings for each other, societal norms dictate that Wong must address her as "13th Aunt" due to her being considered more senior. Their relationship faces challenges amidst the backdrop of foreign domination and the exploitation of local residents.
Wong Fei-hung ultimately confronts the armed thugs who are capturing locals to enslave them and must use all his strength and martial arts skills to defend his community and rescue his beautiful relative from being sold into prostitution.
