Overview:

Nosferatu is widely regarded as the original Dracula movie and remains one of the most iconic and terrifying horror films ever made. Directed by the visionary filmmaker F.W. Murnau, this silent masterpiece tells the story of Count Orlok, a vampire whose chilling presence casts a shadow over a small German town. When Bram Stoker's widow refused to grant Murnau the rights to Dracula, he and screenwriter Henrik Galeen simply changed the characters' names and created their own version of the classic vampire tale.

Max Schreck's portrayal of Count Orlok is nothing short of legendary, delivering a performance that continues to send shivers down viewers' spines even after more than eighty years. Murnau's direction is equally masterful, blending eerie atmosphere, innovative cinematography, and haunting imagery to create a film that transcends its era.

Restoration and Presentation:

This DVD release of Nosferatu has been meticulously restored by the Münchner Filmmuseum and the Cineteca del Comune di Bologna, using the best available materials from the nitrate original. The restoration process has faithfully replicated the tints and tones of the original film, bringing Murnau's vision to life in stunning detail.

The film is presented with a new music score composed by James Bernard, known for his work on many classic Hammer horror films, including the 1958 version of Dracula. This new score adds an extra layer of tension and atmosphere to the already haunting visuals.

Nosferatu remains a timeless masterpiece of horror cinema, and this beautifully restored DVD edition ensures that Murnau's vision can be appreciated by modern audiences in all its spine-chilling glory.

F.W. Murnau's silent vampire classic. Count Orlok (Max Schreck) decides to move from his ruined castle to the city of Bremen and hires real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to make the arrangements for him. But Orlok is also the vampire Nosferatu, and when he takes a shine to Hutter's young wife Ellen (Greta Schroder), it seems that the worst is indeed possible. Adapted from Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' (though with character names changed for legal reasons), Murnau's film also features some of the most famous sequences in cinema, including the Count's climb up the stairs to Ellen's room, his claw-hand outstretched and his crooked shadow on the wall. This is the version restored by the Münchner Filmmuseum and the Cineteca del Comune di Bologna, featuring a new score by James Bernard.
