Overview

"Music of the Heart" (original title: "A szív dallamai") is a 1999 American musical drama film directed by Wes Craven and written by Pamela Gray. The film is based on the 1995 documentary Small Wonders and tells the inspiring true story of Roberta Guaspari, portrayed by Meryl Streep, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought tirelessly for funding for music education in New York City public schools.

Set in 1988 New York City, the film follows Roberta, a recently divorced violinist struggling to rebuild her life while raising her two sons, Alexi and Nicholas Tzavaras, alongside her mother, Assunta Guaspari. Encouraged by her mother, Roberta takes a leap of faith and accepts a substitute teaching position at Central Park East School in East Harlem, despite having little formal experience in teaching music. Her passion and determination quickly inspire a group of children and their initially skeptical parents, leading to the growth of her program and its eventual expansion.
