Desciption:
It was customary - in fact, popular in Salzburg, where Mozart was born, for composers to produce Divertimenti, Serenades and Partitas (Suites) for festive social. This gave the young Mozart an excellent opportunity to conduct musical experiments. He wrote his Divertimento in D, K.251 in 1776, when he was 20 years old. The work is known as the Nannerl septet having been composed in all probability for the name-day of Mozarts sister Nannerl. There is evidence for the fact that the divertimento, composed at the same time as the Haffner Serenade K.250, was written down at great speed a brilliant piece of occasional music, in which elements of the French style are combined with south German song melodies and the instruments blend together to produce a witty chamber music sound. In Vienna in 1787, between the much acclaimed premieres of Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Mozart entered in his catalogue of works Ein musikalischer Spass (A musical joke). With subtle irony, unrepressed humour and obvious pleasure at his own joke, Mozart caricatures his fellow Viennese composers their technical clumsiness and their lack of imagination and sensitivity. The well-known and much loved Eine kleine Nachtmusik, also documented in 1787, originally consisted of five sections, but the Minuet and Trio placed after the allegro has been lost. The four surviving movements are written with particular care and probably considered his most popular instrumental work.
