Overview
"Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" is a 1982 British concert comedy film directed by Terry Hughes, with film segments by Ian MacNaughton. The film features the iconic Monty Python comedy troupe, which includes Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin, as they perform a variety of their beloved sketches live at the Hollywood Bowl.
The film also showcases Carol Cleveland in several supporting roles and includes musical performances by Neil Innes. Additionally, Python superfan Kim "Howard" Johnson makes an appearance as an 'extra' during the shows.
The performance is enriched with filmed inserts taken from two Monty Python specials, Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus, which aired on German television in 1972. The live performance was recorded on videotape during a four-day run starting September 26, 1980, and was subsequently transferred to film. Following the worldwide success of "Life of Brian," the Pythons initially planned to release a film that combined the two German shows with new dubbing and editing. However, due to practical challenges, "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" was released instead.
While the film primarily features sketches from the television series, the scripts and performances may differ from those originally seen on TV. The lineup also includes classic sketches that predate "Monty Python's Flying Circus," such as the "Four Yorkshiremen sketch," which originates from 1967's At Last the 1948 Show.
