Overview:

Mécs László, born in Hernádszentistván in 1895, emerged as a prominent figure in Hungarian religious poetry between the two World Wars. A member of the Jászóvári Premontrei Canonry since 1914, Mécs's first poetry collection was published in 1923. Known for his captivating performances and resonant voice, he drew large audiences wherever he went. His poetry reached places that newspapers could not, offering solace to a despairing Hungarian populace. Mécs László's influence extended to cities and villages across the Carpathian Basin, making his name synonymous with powerful poetic expression.

Mécs László's verses, imbued with Christian humanism and calls for patience, have been translated into English, Italian, German, and Spanish. Despite being silenced by the government after World War II, his popularity among Hungarian emigrants never waned. To them, he was a towering anti-communist poet akin to Arany János. Arrested on false charges in 1953 and released in 1956, Mécs László was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He spent his final years in Pannonhalma, passing away in 1978.

To honor the legacy of this distinguished poet, Tinta Könyvkiadó presents "Huszonöt Legszebb Verse," a collection of Mécs László's twenty-five most beautiful poems.
