Boléro is a 1928 orchestral piece by French composer Maurice Ravel. It is one of his most famous works and was one of his last completed pieces before illness made it difficult for him to write music.
The piece was commissioned by Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein and first performed at the Paris Opéra on November 22, 1928. It is known for starting softly and ending as loudly as possible. The orchestration builds over a constant snare drum rhythm. The piece is written in C major and 3/4 time.
Boléro is a one-movement piece that is 15 minutes long. It is Ravel's simplest composition. The piece is introduced by a single theme played by the flute over a simple rhythmic pattern. The theme is repeated over and over in different instrumental combinations. The dynamic level gradually increases from pianissimo to fortissimo over the course of the piece.
Some say that Boléro evokes feelings of nostalgia. However, this nostalgia is often invented and represents a longing for a glamorous period that never existed for most people.
