Description
MAGYAR POSTA / LESZNAI A.: VASÁRNAP (RÉSZLET) - LESZNAI A.: SUNDAY (DETAIL) / 1981 ANDOR A. / Stamp
Postage stamp issued by Hungary in 1981. It features the artwork of Lesznai Anna, a Hungarian poet, writer, graphic artist, and textile designer who was born in 1885 and died in 1966. The text lists the name of the country, the name of the artist, and the title of the artwork in Hungarian and English.
The artwork is a detail from a painting by Lesznai Anna called Vasárnapi (Sunday), which was created in 1912. The painting depicts a scene of a Sunday afternoon in a garden, where a group of friends are enjoying music, conversation, and tea. The painting reflects Lesznai’s style of combining folk art motifs, bright colors, and geometric shapes. The painting is part of the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery.
Lesznai Anna was one of the most influential and respected Hungarian poets and artists of the 20th century. She was a member of the Nyolcak (The Eight), a group of avant-garde artists who introduced modernism to Hungarian art. She was also a founding member of the Vasárnapi Kör (Sunday Circle), a literary and philosophical salon that gathered some of the most prominent intellectuals and writers of the time, such as Lukács György, Balázs Béla, Kaffka Margit, and Ady Endre. She wrote many poems, stories, essays, and memoirs that expressed her personal and social views, as well as her love for nature and culture. She also designed and illustrated several books, such as her own fairy tales and Ady’s poems.
The stamp is part of a series of four stamps that celebrate Hungarian art and culture.
