MAGYAR POSTA / A. DURER: TANCOLO PARASZT PAR (TANCOLO PEASANT PAR) 1514 / HALALÁNAK 450 ÉVFORDULÓJA (450TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH) / Stamp
Postage stamp issued by Hungary in 1979. It features the artwork of A. Dürer: Táncoló paraszt pár (Dancing Peasant Couple), a copper engraving that was created in 1514 by Albrecht Dürer, a German painter, printmaker, and theorist who is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Northern Renaissance. The text lists the name of the country, the name of the artist, the title of the artwork in Hungarian and English, and the year of issue. The stamp also marks the 450th anniversary of Dürer’s death, which occurred on April 6, 1528 in Nuremberg, Germany.
The artwork depicts a scene of two peasants dancing in a festive mood, holding hands and smiling. The man wears a hat with a feather, a shirt with puffed sleeves, and breeches. The woman wears a bonnet, a blouse with a low neckline, and a skirt. They are surrounded by other peasants who are playing music, drinking, and chatting. The engraving is part of a series of six prints that Dürer made between 1514 and 1520, depicting various aspects of peasant life. The series is known as the “Large Peasant Scenes” or the “Large Landscapes” and is considered one of Dürer’s masterpieces of graphic art.
The stamp is part of a series of four stamps that celebrate Hungarian art and culture.
