In 1961, KQED San Francisco filmed a series of Lehmann's master classes at the Music Academy of the West for National Educational Television (Thirteen/WNET). In the course of these classes, Lehmann offers important interpretive insights, shares some of her life story, and even performs several passages with singular expressive force, albeit in a baritone sprechtstimme (she herself candidly quips, "I
have always in my life done things very thoroughly, so I lost also my voice thoroughly"). This second volume, devoted to operatic scenes, includes Lehmann's priceless demonstration/performance of the
Marschallin's Monologue from Der Rosenkavalier.
Over the years, Lehmann's students included Rose Bampton, Eleanor Steber, Grace Bumbry,, Maralin Niska, and Benita Valente, as well as Marilyn Horne, who now heads the vocal department at the Music
Academy of the West.
