With almost thirty CDs under his own name, guitarist Bill Frisell has now delivered a decent production. What was still missing was a live DVD. Fortunately, there is now Live In Montreal, which adequately fills this gap. This is a concert on July 1, 2002 during the Festival International De Jazz De Montreal. Frisell performed there with his then septet, with drummer Matt Chamberlain, bassist David Plitch and steel guitar and mandolin player Greg Leisz and a horn section with Ron Miles on trumpet, Billy Drewes on sax and Curtis Fowlkes on trombone. The set list mainly included tracks from the albums Blues Dream and Ghost Town with Frisell's signature mix of Nashville-country, swampy blues and abstract jazz. In between songs the group takes ample time for free improvisations, often based on Bill's own sample loops. The DVD is of good picture and sound quality and offers a nice view of Frisell's beautifully painted guitar and Ron Miles' very elegantly detailed trumpet. With extra interview with Frisell. (HB)
