Overview
This volume concludes Series II of the complete edition of Liszt's free arrangements and transcriptions for piano solo. While Series I (covering original two-hand piano works, Vols. 1–18) was completed in 1985, this volume—part of Series II (transcriptions of works by other composers, Vols. 1–24)—brings the project to a close.
The works presented here originate from Liszt's so-called "late" period. It includes monumental transcriptions such as the Finale de Don Carlos (1867) and Aida (1878), both based on operatic themes by Verdi, along with an additional fifteen transcriptions composed in the interim. Among these, pieces like Am stillen Herd, the Ballade, and Walhall incorporate themes by Wagner. A distinctly Hungarian element runs through selections such as Szép Ilonka (after Mihály Mosonyi), the Introduction and Hungarian March (from Count Imre Széchényi), and the set of 5 Hungarian Folk Songs. The volume also features transcriptions of La Marseillaise (by Rouget de Lisle), single pieces by Gizycka-Zamoyska, Schumann, Bülow, and Spohr, two by Lassen, and finally, dance pieces by Herbeck and Pezzini. An appendix presents an early version of one of the Lassen transcriptions, Löse, Himmel, meine Seele.
Two versions of this edition are available—a blue hard clothbound version and a soft paperbound version. Both share an identical preface outlining the key technical and musical aspects, while the detailed source descriptions and critical commentary are included only in the hardbound edition. Early pages feature reproductions of Liszt's original manuscript pages, offering a deeper insight into the composer's creative process.
