English Summary:

In 1999, Pierre Morhange (Jean-Baptiste Maunier), a French conductor performing in the United States, is informed before a concert that his mother has died. After the performance he returns to his home in France for her funeral. An old friend named Pépinot (Didier Flamand) arrives at his door with a diary which belonged to their teacher, Clément Mathieu. They proceed to read it together.

In 1949, fifty years earlier, Clément Mathieu (Gérard Jugnot), a failed musician, arrives at Fond de l'Étang ("Bottom of the Pond"), a French boarding school for troubled boys, to work as a supervisor and teacher. At the gate, he sees a very young boy, Pépinot (Maxence Perrin), waiting for Saturday, when he says his father will pick him up. The viewers later learn that his parents were killed in the Second World War during the Nazi occupation of France, but Pépinot does not know this.

Mathieu discovers the boys being ruthlessly punished by the headmaster Rachin (François Berléand) and attempts to use humour and kindness to win them over. When a booby trap set by one of the boys, Le Querrec, injures the school's elderly caretaker Maxence (Jean-Paul Bonnaire), Mathieu keeps the culprit's identity from the headmaster, while encouraging Le Querrec to nurse Maxence during his recovery.

Les Choristes est un film musical et une comédie dramatique française réalisé par Christophe Barratier, sorti en 2004. Il s'agit d'une adaptation du film de Jean Dréville La Cage aux rossignols (1945), lui-même tiré d'une idée de Georges Chaperot et René Wheeler.

En 1999, alors qu'il s'apprête à donner l’un de ses concerts aux États-Unis, le chef d’orchestre Pierre Morhange apprend que sa mère est décédée. Il retourne chez lui, en France, après son concert pour ses funérailles. Un de ses vieux amis, Pépinot, arrive à sa porte avec un journal intime ayant appartenu à Clément Mathieu, l’un de leurs professeurs. Ils le lisent ensemble.

Cinquante ans auparavant, en 1949, Clément Mathieu, musicien raté et professeur de musique sans emploi, arrive au « Fond de l’Étang », un internat de rééducation pour garçons, pour travailler comme surveillant. Près du portail, il aperçoit un très jeune garçon nommé Pépinot, attendant le samedi, jour où, selon lui, son père viendra le chercher. On apprend plus tard que les parents de Pépinot sont morts pendant l’Occupation de la France par l'Allemagne durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, mais Pépinot refuse de l'admettre.

Clément découvre que les garçons sont sévèrement punis par Rachin, le directeur, et essaie alors d’utiliser l’humour et la gentillesse pour s’occuper des élèves. Quand un dispositif piège conçu par Le Querrec, l’un des garçons, est utilisé contre le père Maxence, l’infirmier et le doyen de l’internat, Clément décide de cacher l’identité du coupable au directeur, en échange des services de Le Querrec à l’infirmerie. Mais l'état du père Maxence empire, alors il est conduit à l'hôpital.
