Overview
Ernst Lubitsch's 1942 classic, To Be or Not to Be (Lenni vagy nem lenni), is a blend of comedy, intrigue, and historical drama. Set in Warsaw, 1939, the film centers on a group of Polish actors led by Joseph Tura (played by Jack Benny) and his wife Maria Tura (played by Carole Lombard). When their anti-Nazi play is shut down by the Polish government, they switch to Shakespeare's Hamlet. However, Joseph becomes suspicious when a young soldier frequently leaves during his iconic "To be or not to be" monologue to meet his wife backstage.
As war intensifies, the actors find themselves embroiled in a dangerous plot to outwit the Nazis, leading to a blend of tension and humor that only Lubitsch could master. This witty and bold satire is one of the director's most beloved works.
