French Summary:

L'Enfant sauvage est l'histoire d'un enfant, capturé comme un animal en 1800 dans l'Aveyron par des paysans. Il sera tout d'abord utilisé comme une bête de foire, puis amené auprès du Docteur Itard, à l'Institut national de sourds et muets de Paris. L'enfant sauvage semble être sourd et muet. Le monde scientifique dont Pinel fait partie, le considère, très majoritairement, comme un attardé qui a, pour cette raison, été abandonné. Toutefois, le docteur Itard pense que ce qui apparaît comme un retard mental est le résultat de l'absence de contact avec les hommes. Il va lui apprendre le quotidien d'une vie d'enfant civilisé et le faire émerger de sa primitive animalité en lui enseignant ce qu'est le langage. Difficiles épreuves mais l'enfant sauvage articule quelques sons qui ont pour lui un sens. Victor devient son nom. Il acquiert peu à peu une humanité touchante.

The Wild Child (French: L'Enfant sauvage, released in the United Kingdom as The Wild Boy) is a 1970 French film by director François Truffaut. Featuring Jean-Pierre Cargol, François Truffaut, Françoise Seigner and Jean Dasté, it tells the story of a child who spends the first eleven or twelve years of his life with little or no human contact. It is based on the true events regarding the child Victor of Aveyron, reported by Jean Marc Gaspard Itard.

The film opens with the statement: "This story is authentic: it opens in 1798 in a French forest."

One summer day in 1798, a naked boy of 11 or 12 years of age (Jean-Pierre Cargol) is found in a forest in the rural district of Aveyron in southern France. A woman sees him, then runs off screaming. She finds some hunters and tells them that she saw a wild boy. They hunt him down with a pack of dogs (a Beauceron, a German Shepherd, an Airedale Terrier and an English Springer Spaniel). The dogs, upon picking up the boy's scent, chase him up a tree. A branch breaks off, and the dogs attack him when he falls. He fights them off leaving one wounded, then continues to flee and hides in a hole. The dogs continue to follow his scent, eventually finding his hiding hole. The hunters arrive and force him out of the hole using smoke to cut off his air supply. After he emerges, the men grab him.

1798-ban egy franciaországi erdőben vadászok egy 12 év körüli fiút találnak, aki vadember módjára él az erdőben. Beszélni nem tud, csak artikulátlanul kiáltozik, ruhátlanul járkál, gyökereket és makkot eszik. Miután rátalálnak, a Süketnémák Intézetébe viszik és Dr. Itard kezd el foglalkozni vele. A jólelkű orvos kollégáival ellentétben nem hajlandó elfogadni, hogy a gyermek szellemi fogyatékos. És mivel szenvedélyesen érdekli, hogy milyen az az ember, aki saját fajtársaitól elszakítva a civilizáció hatásaitól érintetlenül töltötte el élete első éveit, magához veszi a fiút és személyesen törődik vele. Házvezetőnője segítségével, emberfeletti türelemmel és határtalan szeretettel próbálják védencüket, Victort ránevelni a civilizált viselkedésre.
