Leaving the 20th Century is a recording of the Manic Millennium concert by the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers, released 2000. The concert, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the band, was performed on New Year's Eve 1999–2000 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, in front of more than 57,000 fans. The event became international as the final song of the event was broadcast live all over the world through satellites.
The concert was released on VHS and DVD. It includes interview clips in which the band discuss their history and the songs, and an extra feature performance of "Ready for Drowning" and "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next", recorded at Château de la Motte, France, in 1998.
"We're not obsessive at all!" claims one member of the
audience at this New Year's Eve gig, the sarcasm of her words
evident by the fact that she is clad from head to toe in Manic
Street Preacher-styled glam-rock nightwear. In truth, it's
difficult to think of many bands whose fans are quite as devoted
as those of the Manics. Certainly any MSP follower worth their
salt would have been at Cardiff's Millennium on December 31, 1999
for a gig that not only celebrated the dawning of a new era but
also a decade of Preaching which has seen the band overcome the
disappearance of guitarist/lyricist Richey Edwards to become one
of the country's most beloved acts. Nor did James Dean Bradfield
& Co. disappoint as they tore through a set ranging from early
tracks like "Motown Junk" and "You Love Us" to more recent
crowd-pleasers such as "Everything Must Go". --Clark Collis On
the DVD: Stacked to its heavily mascara-ed gills with extras the
DVD also includes a brace of bonus tracks, discography, photo
gallery and a series of interviews in which, among other things,
bassist Nicky Wire reveals that they once wanted to release a
record covered with sandpaper "so that when it was in the rack
with all the other records it would destroy them." --Clark Collis
DVD Special features:
Exclusive interview footage recorded at the Millennium rehearsals, Newport Civic Centre, Wales, December 1999
